Crying is often a rebound when having a bad experience or a deep sadness. Therefore, it has become customary, that along with the cries and tears, one can let go of grief and loss. Really?
A recent study said, tears are only useful in one of three people who weep. And, crying will become a habit for them. The same study also revealed that crying is not a tool for releasing emotions, as heralded over the years.
In an article published online in the Journal of Research in Personality, researchers asked 97 women aged 18-48 in the Netherlands for the mood to cry and write in a diary for three-month trial.
Every night, the respondent wrote a mood that encourages them to cry, and whether they actually shed a tear. If they cry, they write down whether involving sobbing and crying why, how long it lasts, how intense they are crying, where it happened, whether anyone else around, and how they felt afterward.
Scientists examine the 1004 incident finally cried. The study calls, on average, women cry for eight minutes in the living room. Usually they are alone or accompanied by one other person.
Conflict, loss, or seeing other people suffer is the most common triggers for a woman to tears. Around 61 percent reported no change in mood compared to the feeling before crying. While 30 percent claimed a better mood and 9 percent felt worse.
"Only a small incident could improve the atmosphere of the day crying, in contrast with the common thing we know," said Jonathan Rottenberg, a professor of psychology at the University of South Florida in Tampa, and the study's lead author.
The study found that there was no psychological changes that indicate the activity to cry with the greatest intensity observed crying. "Crying is not nearly as profitable as we think," Rottenberg said as pages loaded MSNBC.
Instead of crying, he suggested, to improve the quality of their social networks. "Crying is not likely to help because of tears, but it gets the social support and draw attention to important issues," said Rottenberg.
How do you feel after crying?
